Mississippi is bordered on the north by the state of Tennessee, on the east by Alabama, on the south by Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico, and on the west by Louisiana and Arkansas (across the Mississippi River).
Mississippi is heavily forested, with over half of the state's acreage covered by wild trees (mostly pine trees, but Mississippi has an abundance of other trees) (cottonwood, elm, hickory, oak, pecan, sweet gum, and tupelo).
Mississippi was the second state to secede from the Union as one of the Confederate States of America on January 9, 1861.

Mississippi has the ninth-highest drunken driving fatality rate in the nation, despite a drop of 63 percent over the past 20 years, and it's on the rise.
In 2002, 332 people in Mississippi died in drunk driving accidents, according to a new report by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
Mississippi's alcohol-related fatality rate also rose compared to 2001, when drunken drivers killed 277 people in the state.

Mississippi got hammered much worse than Louisiana but is barely in the news because the leadership has been much more competent.
When I worked for ibm, the bureaucracy in the headquarters region in lower NY was so bad that the people "running" (sic?) the company even admitted that they couldn't manage it.

The government alleges that in preparing customers’ tax returns, the defendants’ employees list false and/or unsubstantiated deductions, fabricate businesses for the false reporting of self employment income, and falsely claim dependents.
The complaint estimates that Brown and Steen-Brown’s alleged fraudulent tax preparation scheme has resulted in an understatement of their customers’ federal income tax liability of more than $14 million for returns that their business prepared and filed for the 2000 through 2002 tax years.
“People who prepare false returns or claims for refund are cheating not just the federal treasury, but all law-abiding taxpayers,” said Eileen J. O’Connor, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Tax Division.

As I suggested recently on my own website, the most appropriate gesture the Republican leadership could make toward the victims of Katrina right now would be to table discussion of ending the estate tax in favor of using its proceeds for disaster relief and recovery until we’re a first-world nation again.
Greedy and selfish people want to delude themselves that taxes are ‘bad’ for the economy - when in reality their greed is what’s actually bad for the economy.

 Harrison County, Mississippi Missing Persons List (450+)
The Harrison County Coroner's Offices has released a large list of people that are unaccounted for, missing or had inquiries made about them.
The list was issued by workers with the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team.
If you looked at the list, you would see that some of the listings are for Harrison county, but Hancock is represented as well, as are (at least) Jackson, St. Tammany (Louisiana), Forrest, Lauderdale, and Jones.
