This is probably veering away from the main topic of our list, but it does paint a picture for me that though I love birds and want to learn more about them all the time, I cannot do so in a vacuum.
While colors in photos may be somewhat misleading my guess, based on the brightness of the yellow in the middle breast and belly, the stronger contrast of fl and white in the tertials, and bill size, I'm leaning heavily toward the Great Crested Flycatcher.
I heard and recorded at least 3 birds calling close to the road, at a point where two linear "potholes" are aligned north of and perpendicular to the main east-west grvel road.
