Photographic film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Photographic film a sheet of plastic (polyester, celluloid (nitrocellulose) or cellulose acetate) coated with an emulsion containing light-sensitive silver halide salts (bonded by gelatin) with variable crystal sizes that determine the sensitivity and resolution of the film.
Black and white reversal film exists, but is uncommon — one of the reasons reversal films are popular among professional photographers is the fact that they are generally superior to print films with regards to color reproduction.
Some films, like Kodak's Technical Pan, are not ISO rated and therefore careful examination of the film's properties must be made by the photographer before exposure and development.

PHOTOgraphic Magazine Online: Our Favorite Color Slide Films
The film is a bit slow for some purposes (many photographers rate it at EI 32 or 40 instead of its specified ISO 50; it can be pushed to EI 100 when necessary), but it's a great choice whenever high film speed and a subdued rendition aren't requirements.
By far the finest-grained ISO 400 color-slide film at RMS 13, Provia 400F also produces excellent colors and could be used as one's only slide film if one were to limit oneself to one slide film (of course, one probably wouldn't, since 400-speed films cost somewhat more than their slower counterparts).
This film probably was responsible for the demise of the excellent Fujichrome MS 100/1000, since Provia 400F produces richer colors and finer grain at the 400, 800 and 1000 speed ratings.

 Document: CLN_19_07
Decades ago, when fl and withe films were the dominant photographic recording materials, the resolving power was seen by many photo enthusiasts as the deciding factor of photographic quality.
The film manufacturers generally conduct their tests under special, sterile, precisely repeatable laboratory conditions where high performance microscope lenses with resolving powers beyond 1.000 linepairs per millimeter and light sources with very controlled spectrum are used to image the test targets onto film, completely unrelated to any real world photo situation.
Film manufacturers live under the impression, that only few if any lenses are capable of utilizing film resolving powers of 200 linepairs per millimeter and beyond.

Kinoeye | German Horror: Jorg Buttgereit's Nekromantik I & II
Throughout his films, Buttgereit concertedly associates the act of photographing or filming an object with death itself, using Super-8, 16mm and 35mm film, video, polaroids, stills-photography and television pictures in the construction of his representations of the dead and those who love them.
And memory, for Buttgereit, is itself visually encoded in the photograph and the film.
Taking as their premise the horrors of a past prematurely buried, they serve to expose the complicity of the film medium in acts of ideological manipulation of the subject and, in turn, point to the ways in which that medium can bring about a re-sensitisation to the horrors of the past.

 Sid Laverents
The technical wizardry here was not in the filming, as it would be in his most famed films, but in the performance, and a straightforward documentation of it was the most appropriate (and valuable) thing he could do.
The visuals here are far more remarkable than in the snail film; the ugly tongue of the caterpillar, the vivid color of the caterpillar’s skin which it oddly sheds, the spinning of the silk, the emergence of the butterfly, the drying of the butterfly’s wings.
The main problem with this film (besides it being too slow) is that it is essentially a slapstick comedy, and even though Sid is clearly super-capable as he pushes 90, it’s just not pleasant to see an older gentleman drop tools on his foot.
