Photographic printing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Photographic printing is the process of producing a final image for viewing, usually on sensitized paper from a previously prepared photographic negative.
The process consists of three major steps, performed in a photographic darkroom or within an automated photo printing machine:
Processing of the latent image through a multistep chemical immersion process.

Yellow couplers for photographic elements and processes - Patent 5118599
Photographic elements in which the coupler according to the invention is incorporated can be simple elements comprising a support and a single silver halide emulsion layer, or they can be multilayer, multicolor elements.
Photographic elements are exposed to actinic radiation, typically in the visible region of the spectrum, to form a latent image and then processed to form a visible dye image.
Single layer photographic elements were prepared by coating a cellulose acetate-butyrate film support with a photosensitive layer containing a silver bromide emulsion at 70.2 and 140.4 mg/ft.sup.2 for 2 and 4 equivalent couplers, respectively, gelatin at 350 mg/ft.sup.2 and an image coupler (0.20 mmol/ft.sup.2) dispersed in half its weight of dibutyl phthalate.

Photographers in the nineteenth century employed a wide variety of materials and processes; everything from honey to uranium found its way into one method or another.
The method, one of the finest ever developed, transferred the photographic image to a copper printing plate, which was then etched to retain ink in areas corresponding to the fls of the picture.
As a negative process, a piece of clear glass is coated with a very thin layer of iodized collodion (made from gun-cotton [nitrocellulose] dissolved in ether and alcohol, mixed with potassium iodide).

Definition, Early Photographic Processes, History, Photography Etc with Ambrotype   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The ambrotype process (from Greek ambrotos, "immortal") is a photographic process invented in the mid-1850s by Frederick Scott Archer.
The photographer may choose to layer both the amber and the asphaltum on the emulsion side of the plate, or to cover the emulsion side with transparent varnish and coat the back of the plate with the dark varnish.
The process required the negative to be process immediately after exposure and can be thought of as an instant photograph of the 19th century.

Beyond Silver - Alternative Photographic Processes
The process is an innovative tool for alteration, with image and emulsion transfers reinterpreting the traditional snapshot ethic of the camera.
Most of the processes share in common a sensitivity only to ultraviolet light, which means that either the sun or an intense source of artificial UV must be used to expose an image.
The palettes of alternative processes stray from the usual gray or fls, such as the golden hues of Platinum prints, the liquid, impressionistic pastels of Polaroids, or the deep purples and blues in Cyanotypes.

Yes, many of these processes were used for photography in its earlier years and are "historical," but these processes are most often referred to as "alternative photography" now.
