Oxfordshire (abbreviated Oxon, from the Latinised form Oxonia) is a county in south-east England, bordering on Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, and Warwickshire.
The county of Oxfordshire, at that time entirely situated to the north of the River Thames, was formed in the early years of the 10th century.
The Vale of the White Horse and parts of South Oxfordshire south of the River Thames are traditionally part of Berkshire but were added to the administrative county in 1974.

Family historians with links to Oxfordshire are fortunate in having a wealth of transcribed data available, as a result of the efforts of many volunteers over the years.
In particular, relationships between household members were not given and the only indication about place of birth, was whether people were born in the county in which they were resident on census night.
Conversely there were a few similar places in neighbouring counties which belonged to Oxfordshire in 1841 and so do appear in our index for that year but not for later years.
