Israel Putnam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Putnam was born in Salem Village (now Danvers), Massachusetts, to Joseph and Elizaebeth Putnam, a prosperous farming family of Salem Witch Trials fame.
Putnam was outspoken against British taxation policies and around the time of the Stamp Act crisis in 1766, he was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly and was one of the founder of the Connecticut Sons of Liberty.
In 1888, Putnam’s remains were removed from the Brooklyn cemetry and placed in a sarcophagus built into the foundation of a monument, newly erected on a plot of ground near the Brooklyn town green.

One of the most important activities during the early years of the park was the clearing and landscaping of the terrain around the stone piles that marked the remains of the soldiers' huts during the encampment of 1778-79.
Putnam, Huntington, and Sheldon avenues were named for generals who were associated with the encampment: Major General Israel Putnam, who commanded the three brigades that wintered in Redding in 1778-79; Jedediah Huntington, commander of the 2nd Connecticut Brigade; and Elisha Sheldon, who commanded the state cavalry corps.
