MORGAN had reported to Nathanael GREENE: "Forage and provisions are not to be had; here we cannot subsist." In consequence of the exhausted condition of the country in which he was stationed, his whole force could never be kept together.
He had requested Nathanael GREENE to recall his detachment to the main army, or to suffer him to pass into Georgia; neither of these requests being approved of, he next asked that a diversion might be made in his favor.
Nathanael GREENE announced it in general orders, and his army saluted the victors as "the finest fellows on earth, more worthy than ever of love." RUTLEDGE of South Carolina repeated their praises, and rewarded Col. Andrew PICKENS with a commission as brigadier.

Nathanael Greene is a revolutionary hero who has been lost to history.
Although places named in his honor dot city and country, few people know his quintessentially American story as a self-made, self-educated military genius who renounced his Quaker upbringing-horrifying his large family-to take up arms against the British.
Greene's southern campaign, which combined the forces of regular troops with bands of irregulars, broke all the rules of eighteenth-century warfare and foreshadowed the guerrilla wars of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Greens are people who support some or all of goals of a Green Party without necessarily working with or voting for that or any party.
A potential basis of unity for Greens could be Green values (as made explicit in the Four Pillars and other documents), but even these aren't shared by all people who see themself as Greens.
Historically, "being green" developed as a political identity together with the blooming of the peace movement, the ecology movement (see preventive paradigm), and the feminist movement in the late 1970s, the time the first green parties on a local level were founded.

This book is an excellent introductory biography of Gen. Greene that shows him as a man within the context of his age, what this Quaker's military motivation was and how he was able to grow in command extremely quickly.
It would have been interesting and proper if the author presented Greene's membership in Freemasonry as a means of him having access to many of the revolutionary war leaders.
To me, it's quite clear that Greene was never adequately recognized for his wartime accomplishments because he died unexpectedly in 1786 of a stroke at age 44 and never had the chance to participate and obtain fame in the founding of the new nation.

Blogcritics.org: Modern Library's 100 Greatest English Language Novels of the 20th Century
It was the one title on the list that had a lot of readers scratching their heads.
The list's bias is most apparent in the inclusion of multiple novels by authors like Forester, Joyce, Conrad, or Lawrence which provide little if any distinction from the author's other works and subsequently squeeze out other less prolific authors who may have only a single work worthy of distinction.
Like many other novels on the list it operates on several levels but it is one of the few books I have been able to "grow up with." I think that is the genuis of the novel and why it should have been recognized.
