The award was established by the Council in 1977, and until 1982 it was given annually.
The list presents books published in the past 16 months that are recommended reading for young adults 12 to 18 It is a general list of fiction and nonfiction titles selected for their proven or potential appeal to the personal reading tastes of the young adult.

Michael Braude Award for Light Verse — The $5,000 biennial award is given "for light verse written in English regardless of the country of origin of the writer".
Metcalf Awards — The Willard L. Metcalf Award in Art and the Addison M. Metcalf Award in Literature are biennial awards of $10,000.

 Powell's Books - Award Winners
The PEN/Faulkner Award was founded by writers in 1980 to honor their peers and is now the largest juried award for fiction in the United States.
The award was named for William Faulkner, who used his Nobel Prize funds to create an award for young writers, and is affiliated with PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists and Novelists), the international writers' organization.
Half of the cash award is given to the author of the winning fiction title, and half is given to the author of the winning nonfiction title.

 Horror Writers Association - Stoker Awards
To ameliorate the competitive nature of awards, the Stokers are given "for superior achievement," not for "best of the year," and the rules are deliberately designed to make ties fairly probable.
The award itself is an eight-inch replica of a fanciful haunted house, designed specifically for HWA by sculptor Steven Kirk.
The winners are announced and the awards presented at a gala banquet held in conjunction with HWA's annual conference, usually in June.

CLARE CAVANAGH, of Deerfield, IL, won the $500 John Frederick Nims Memorial Prize for her translations of contemporary Polish poetry in the February 2005 issue.
The Union League Civic and Arts Poetry Prize for a young poet was presented annually from 1951 to 1972, and re-established in 1993 through the generosity of the Union League Civic & Arts Foundation.
The Editors Prize for Criticism was established in 2004 by the Poetry Foundation.

The winners of the fifth annual Sue Saniel Elkind Poetry Prize are Sharon Cumberland of Seattle for her poem "Before" and Ruth L. Schwartz of Oakland, California, for "Gravity." They shared $1,000, and their poems appeared in the Summer issue of Kalliope: a journal of women's literature and art.
Karen Donovan of Riverside, Rhode Island, won the $1,000 Juniper Prize for her poetry collection Born in This Ruin, which will be published by the University of Massachusetts Press in the spring of 1999.
The award is given annually for a book-length collection of poetry by a poet who has not published a full-length collection.

 U.S. Children's Book Awards
One of the things that makes this list different from the Newbery and Caldecott lists is that books published in the U.S. but written by non-Americans are eligible.
Three awards: the Josette Frank Award (formerly the Child Study Committee Children's Book Award) for fiction, the Flora Stieglitz Straus Award for nonfiction, and the Claudia Lewis Award for poetry.

The annual Poetry Center Book Award has been given by The Poetry Center, based at San Francisco State University, since 1980 to a single outstanding book of poetry published in the past year.
The Poetry Center Book Award carries a $500 prize and an invitation to read, along with the award judge, at The Poetry Center in San Francisco.
An entry fee of $10 per book (all of which is paid directly to the award winner and award judge) must accompany each book.
