 Cameroon - Political
Cameroon has been inhabited for at least 50,000 years according to archaeological evidence of hunter-gatherers who lived in small, nomadic communities.
While Cameroon presents a quiet and relatively stable political scene unlike most of its neighbours, this belies a potential for growing unrest amid calls for separation by Anglophone Cameroon, growing pressures for further political opening up, and concerns expressed both locally and by the international community about human rights abuses.
No dramatic political change is likely, however – aided by continued economic growth, Biya’s policy of co-option and promotion of patronage, and his suppression of opposition, will continue to lend legitimacy to the president and his ruling party.

An SDF opposition party deputy alleged that on February 1, gendarmes molested SDF members in Kama, a village of Biwong Bane division, South Province, while the SDF was holding a preparatory meeting for a rally in a private residence.
Following the unexpectedly strong showing of opposition parties in the region in the 1996 municipal elections, Titus Edzoa, a ruling CPDM member from the southern part of the country, a former Minister of Health, and a longtime presidential aide, declared himself a candidate to oppose incumbent President Biya in the October 1997 election.
The percentages of women and minorities in government or politics does not correspond to their percentages of the population; however, there are no laws that specifically prohibit women or members of minorities from participating in government, in the political process, or in other areas of public life.

The Republic of Cameroon is an independent state in western Africa bordered by Nigeria to the northwest; Chad to the northeast; the Central African Republic to the east; Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon to the south; and the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest (see map).
Cameroon is mainly rural, and the central and southeastern parts of the country are sparsely populated.
Biya's party won a majority in May 1997 legislative elections, and he was reelected in October amid a boycott by the main opposition parties.
