The population of Guatemala is approximately 12 million, the majority of whom are indigenous descendants of the Mayan civilization.
To promote a peaceful electoral campaign, all parties and their candidates were asked to sign a "Code of Conduct" in which the parties promised to respect one another and not engage in campaign tactics that could incite violence or fraud.
Interestingly, in Sumpango the party officials were sometimes reluctant to identify which party they belonged to when asked by Team C. This may have been due to suspicions about our role or a concern about identifying their political allegiance, especially to their neighbors.

However an appeal by opposition parties against the decision is upheld by the Guatemalan Supreme Court and Ríos Montt is temporarily blocked from registering as a candidate until a panel of judges determines if he should be allowed to run.
Montt's political career appears to have come to an end and, with his immunity from prosecution set to expire when his term as a politician ends on 14 January 2004, he now faces the prospect of having to stand trial for the human rights abuses that occurred during his dictatorship.
Ríos Montt was not the only brutal despot to rule in Guatemala and half of the estimated 200,000 dead were murdered before and after his brief reign, but he was the worst, the most ruthless and unforgiving, despite his "born-again" Christian beliefs.
