Hemispheric Nations should help establish confidence in Guyana elections - JAMAICAOBSERVER.COM
While power-sharing by the political parties elected to the Guyana Parliament would be the most desirable outcome of general elections that are constitutionally due, and may be held, by early September, the overriding concern must be that the elections are endorsed by all the political parties and independent observer missions as free and fair.
Guyana is Caricom's largest territory and in the Caribbean Single Market (CSM), the exploitation of Guyana's vast resources becomes available to the region as a whole.
And, since it is clear that the list is defective, the hemispheric nations should require that, at the very least, modalities agreed by the major contending parties are established for holding the elections.

Since the continuous list is updated on a regular basis there is no need for a final registration drive immediately before an election, although a period is often designated for revising the list during the election campaign.

The list is based on the 2001 electoral register with new names added between October 2005 and March this year during a process of continuous registration, but its legitimacy has been challenged by opposition political parties and the private sector.

Given Guyana’s electoral system of proportional representation, it has to be assumed that, while they have not expressly stated it, the PPP too is contemplating some form of power sharing after the elections if it is to participate in government.
