By proposing that three of the 17 parties should facilitate the organization of the three party-groupings, we are not suggesting that those parties that might facilitate the formation of the groupings are automatically the three parties that should contest the presidency in 2003.
We know that all the parties in Liberia are committed to the concept of free and fair democratic elections, to the free enterprise system of an open market economy, as well as to the exercise of individual freedom.

Global Witness: Campaigns: Forests: Liberia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
At the centre of this violence is Liberia, a country that has been at war with itself and its neighbours for 14 years.
Until recently, Liberia was ruled by President Charles Taylor, who since his warlord days in the early 1990s used Liberia’s logging industry as a platform to prolong regional violence, traffic arms, and reap significant extra-budgetary income while destroying Liberia’s forests and redirecting funds that should have been going to the Liberian people.
In order to support Liberia’s moves toward stability, on 19 September the UN authorised UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), and on 14 October the new transitional government assumed power.
