Sudan was a collection of small, independent kingdoms and principalities from the beginning of the Christian era until 1820-21, when Egypt conquered and unified the northern portion of the country.
Sudan is seeking to expand its installed capacity of electrical generation of around 300 megawatts--of which 180 mw is hydroelectric and the rest, thermal.
Sudan’s position during the Iraq/Kuwait crisis in the early 1990s strained relations with the U.S. Sudan stated that Iraq should not have invaded Kuwait, but it was equally critical of the presence of Western forces on Islamic holy lands.

The continuing repression of freedoms of assembly and expression and the harassment of civil society activists and political opponents are clear signs that the Sudanese government is intent on denying the Northern civil society the right to prepare for a sustainable peace," Amnesty International said.
They had gathered there to discuss the "Cairo Declaration" of 24 May, a joint statement of northern political opposition and the SPLM on the peace process and the status of the national capital of Sudan in a future agreement.
Amnesty International has called on both parties to the conflict and the mediators to the peace talks to comprehensively address human rights issues in their discussions and to put the human rights of all Sudanese at the heart of any future agreement.

The major opposition political parties for the most part remained marginalized from the political process; however, as the peace negotiations progressed during the year, opposition parties became more vocal in their demand for inclusion, and the Government sought the support of some to add legitimacy to the agreements.
The parties remain weak, and civil society organisations are only beginning to assert themselves after ears of being bludgeoned by the security organs.
The various religiously affiliated parties opposed the SCP, and, consequently, the progression of civilian and military governments alternately banned and courted the party until 1971, when Nimeiri accused the SCP of complicity in an abortive military coup.

According to Ethiopia's proclamation for party registration issued in 1993, to receive a license a national party should have 1,500 founding members with 40 percent of them expected to be regular residents of a region and the rest at least permanently living in four regions.
A regional political party having 750 founding members with over 40 percent of them being permanent residents of a region can operate legally after registering and receiving a license.
The SEPDC was formed on March 11, 1992 as a coalition of ten political organizations that had seats in the Council of Representatives (transitional parliament) and representing five regions (7, 8, 9, 10 and 11) formed by proclamation n°7/1984 (1992).
