Northern Transnistria was part of the historical region of Podolia while the southern area, which came under the control of the Ottoman Empire in 1504, was part of what came to be known as Yedisan.
According to the census in 1989, the population in Transnistria was 39.9% Moldovan, 28.3% Ukrainian, 25.4% Russian, 1.9% Bulgarian.
Transnistria retaliated by a series of actions meant to destabilize the economic situation in Moldova, in particular, by cutting the power supply from the power plants that were built predominantly in Transnistria in Soviet times.

Transnistria officially Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica, PMR (short form: Pridnestrovie) is a region of the Republic of Moldova in Eastern Europe.
Transnistria is internationally considered to be part of the Republic of Moldova, and previously part of the Moldavian SSR, but has declared independence as the Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica or Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR), with Tiraspol as its capital.
Critics of the past elections claim that some parties and publications were banned just before the elections of 2001, and that the results of that elections were suspicious, as in some regions it was reported that the former Kamchatka-raised metalworker Igor Smirnov collected 103.6 percent of the votes.

In Transnistria: the right of citizens to change their government was severely restricted; authorities reportedly continued to use torture and arbitrary arrest and detention; prison conditions remained harsh, and two members of the so-called Ilascu Group remained in prison despite a July 2004 ruling in their favor by the European Court for Human Rights.
The constitution provides for freedom of association and states that citizens are free to form parties and other social and political organizations; however, the constitution also prohibits organizations that are "engaged in fighting against political pluralism," the "principles of the rule of law," or "the sovereignty and independence or territorial integrity" of the country.
Small parties favoring unification with Romania charged that this provision was intended to impede their political activities, but no group has been prevented from forming as a result of this provision.
