List of political parties in Uruguay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Uruguay has a multi-party system, with three dominant political parties, with extreme difficulty for anybody to achieve electoral success under the banner of any other party.
Uruguay underwent an intermittent series of civil wars through much of the 19th century, which ended in 1904 and the party system has in the past reflected regional loyalties which emerged during that period.

 Uruguay - POLITICAL PARTIES
The Colorado and National parties and, to a lesser extent, the Broad Front coalition, were the three major political entities in 1990.
Until the 1971 elections, the Colorado and National parties together accounted for 90 percent of the votes cast; the remaining 10 percent of the votes were divided among various small parties.
The winning list of the party that received the most votes won the presidency and a percentage of the seats in the Senate and the Chamber of Representatives corresponding to the percentage of votes that the party as a whole received.

 Uruguay - Traditional Parties
Uruguay was one of the few Latin American countries with two political groupings--the Colorado and National parties--as old as the country itself.
In general, however, the Colorado Party traditionally was associated with the city, labor unions, and secularist and "progressive" movements, whereas the National Party identified with the interior farming groups and the more religious and conservative groups.
As a result of the primaries of the Colorado Party in early August 1990, Batlle Ibáñez's Unity and Reform sub-lema ousted the faction led by former President Sanguinetti from the leadership of the Colorado Party.

 Uruguayan political parties
The Colorado (red) Party was the traditional liberal and the Blanco (white) the traditional conservative party.
Uruguayan traditional political parties are not monolithic organisations, in the sense that they might have several “lists” for each of the party’s factions — for instance, the Battlismo or the Sanguinettismo of the Colorado Party, or the Lacallismo of the National Party.
The origin of the names of the parties could be find in the battle of Carpintería in 1836, where Oribe wore his white ribbon, and José Fructuoso Rivera's forces used a sky blue ribbon (using the color of the Uruguayan Cockade of that time or the other color commonly used in the Uruguayan flag).

EIAL IV2 - European Political Parties and the Southern Cone   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Political parties constituted an essential building block in the construction and institutionalization of the relationship, and were in the vanguard of Europe's interest in events in Latin America.
European political parties' activities start from the common presumption that their role is one of external and logistic support for an essentially internal process.
European political parties, especially on the left, have also indirectly contributed to the rethinking of strategy and tactics which took place in the 1980s within Latin American socialist parties in particular, which in turn led to a shift towards social democratic ideologies on the left, and a greater possibility of consensus among the opposition.

Political Affairs Magazine - Venezuela and the century of socialism
All over the world, parties were formed with the intention of doing what the workers of Russia had done — allied themselves with other sections of society being oppressed by the old regime, had a revolution to seize political power and set out to build a radically different society.
Though the many communist parties affiliated to the Communist International always recognised that the revolutionary transformation of their own countries would be distinctive, the example of the armed uprising of the Russian workers, soldiers and peasants amidst a social and military crisis of the old order was a very powerful one.
In fact, the main union peak body CTV is affiliated with Acción Democrática, one of the traditional ruling parties associated with Venezuela’s disastrous period of neo-liberal economics in the 1980s and ’90s.

Finding fault with the elections of 2000, in which Aristide won the Presidency and the Fanmi Lavalas party won a huge majority of elected positions, a group of wealthy opposition parties conducted a noisy, Venezuelan style, media campaign, which won more support abroad than it did at home.
