In November 1982, Zimbabwe was chosen by the OAU to hold one of the non-permanent seats in the UN Security Council for the following two years, which brought it onto the center stage of world events and gave it much-needed experience in international affairs.
According to Zimbabwe's constitution, the president is head of state and head of government, and is elected for a 6-year term by popular majority vote.
Zimbabwe also has substantial coal reserves that are utilized for power generation, and recently discovered in Matabeleland province are coalbed methane deposits greater than any known natural gas field in Southern or Eastern Africa.

Since the defeat of the constitutional referendum in 2000, politics in Zimbabwe have been marked by slow regression away from many of the norms of democratic governance, such as democratic elections; the independence of the judiciary; the rule of law; freedom from racial discrimination; the existence of independent media, civil society and academia.
The specific features are: conspiratorial politics replacing democratic elections; a high incidence of clientilism and rivalry for the leader's favours; widespread corruption; purges or rehabilitations (as with Jonathan Moyo) and succession manoeuvres within the party.

Mr Mugabe and his political party, the Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANU PF), are not only claiming a victory at the March 31st general election, they say that they have secured a two-thirds majority in Parliament which will allow him to re-write the country’s constitution according to his divine will.
All of this is a great shame for Zimbabwe and the ordinary Zimbabweans whose freedoms and rights were won by a tough struggle against the infamous Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) from Britain by a white minority government under a Constitution that gave fl Zimbabweans little or no rights in their own country.
He quickly cut down political opponents in his own government — an early casualty being Joshua Nkomo who led the rival ZAPU PF movement and who was included in the first national government of Zimbabwe.
