Linux   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The first version of the Linux kernel was written by Linus Torvalds and released in 1991, combined with essential components from the GNU project (begun in 1983 by Richard Stallman).
One practical problem with the use of the word "Linux" to refer to both the kernel and the distributions as a whole is that it has often led to confusion in the popular media (and hence among the general public).
The Linux kernel was initially written as a hobby by a Finnish university student, Linus Torvalds, who was attending the University of Helsinki, as a free and modifiable Minix-like kernel.

developerWorks : Linux : New to Linux
Linux is a popular platform for everything from middleware to embedded computing and clusters, to parallel supercomputers and gadgets.
Linux can easily be clustered or customized for highly original experiments or prototypes, simulations, or tests; and the vast array of free software tools that Linux was created to work with can be used in the same creative way.
Linux's robust and open flexibility means that it will remain at the forefront of the development frontier for years to come.

Linux Kernel 2.6: It's Worth More!
Molnar didn't specify exactly which version of the Linux kernel he used, but he did note that it was in the version 2.6 line, and presumably it was a recent version as of October 2004.
It could be argued that the Linux kernel is embedded, since it often operates in tight constraints; but in practice these constraints aren't very tight, and the kernel project can often negotiate requirements to a limited extent (e.g., providing only partial support for a particular peripheral or motherboard if key documentation is lacking).
The x86 processors, which are by far the most popular for the Linux kernel, are relatively stable and kernel developers have a lot of experience with them.

A Linux distribution (or 'distro' for short) is a bundle of the Linux kernel and applications and a suite of programs for installing and maintaining a Linux system.
This is in contrast to some Linux distros and most *BSD distros which drop you at a root shell prompt, and expect you to use the root shell prompt to install X11, GNOME or KDE if you want it.
