Popular music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Popular music is music belonging to any of a number of musical styles that are accessible to the general public and mostly distributed commercially.
In this respect, popular music differs from traditional folk music, which was created by ordinary people for their own enjoyment, and from classical music, which was originally created to serve the purposes of the Church or for the entertainment of the nobility.
The elevation of classical music to a position of special value is closely connected to the concept of a Western canon, and to theories of educational perennialism.

Classical music is a broad, somewhat imprecise term, referring to music produced in, or rooted in the traditions of, European art, ecclesiastical and concert music, particularly between 1000 and 1900.
Improvisation in classical music performance was far more common during the Baroque (Baroque: Elaborate an extensive ornamentation in decorative art and architecture that flourished in Europe in the 17th century) era, and recently the performance of such music by modern classical musicians has been enriched by a revival of the old improvisational practices.
Composers of classical music have often made use of folk music (folk music: The traditional and typically anonymous music that is an expression of the life of people in a community), that is, music created by untutored musicians, spread by word of mouth.

Crossover (music) - QuickSeek Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
In popular music, crossover is a term used to describe material borrowed from a different style or genre and whose popularity crosses the considered boundaries of styles or genres.
For example, in the early years of rock and roll, many songs originally recorded by African-American musicians were re-recorded by white artists (such as Pat Boone) in a more toned-down style (often with changed lyrics) that lacked the hard edge of the original versions.
In popular music, the term crossover was used in the 1980's to describe a style of aggressive rock and roll.

This music style draws many influences from classical music and jazz fusion, in contrast to American rock, which was more influenced by rhythm and blues and country.
Progressive rock artists sought to move away from the limitations of popular rock and pop music formats, and "progress" rock to the point that it could achieve new forms, often but not always alluding to the sophistication of jazz or classical music.
This is characteristic of music that is meant to be listened to relatively closely and for its own sake, as opposed to relatively casually or as background noise (as are several of the features on this list, in fact).

All musical recordings consist of both a musical work and a sound recording, each of which is protected by copyright law, unless the copyright term has expired and one or both copyrighted works has entered the public domain.
In certain cases, particularly with classical music, the sound recording (which was produced relatively recently) may be protected by copyright law even though the musical work (which was composed hundreds of years ago) has entered the public domain.
It is possible that some of the older musical compositions you plan to use are in the public domain (i.e., their copyright has expired), but determining the public domain status of a given musical work gets rather complicated.

Songs We Sing is a winding collection, running the stylistic and historic gamut of pop music; hues of ragtime, folk, psychedelia, country, and classical music are cast liberally across the album.
Songs We Sing recalls a time when America was under the spell of such UK imports as Donovan and Van Morrison.
His songs are derivative, musically speaking, and his singing style bothered me. I guess what I want to say here is that his beautiful vocal delivery on "Lullaby" on the Curious George soundtrack is not representative of anything (at least on the first half) of "Songs We Sing".
