 Cycling in the Zone
Given the serious nature of professional competition such as the Tour de France, and the Giro d'Italia, combined with the intense degree of suffering by the cyclists, this paper proposes that professional cyclists enter a zone that may not include an experience equivalent to a runner's high.
For elite cyclists, critical dimensions for the zone would seem to be the autotelic experience, the total absorption in the ride, and being in "kairos" time.
The other important dimension of the cycling zone is the trait of hypnotic susceptibility, which would allow the cyclist to dissociate from the pain and extreme conditions that must be endured during a race, such as the Tour.
