Television broadcasts from the CBC began on September 6, 1952, with the opening of a station in Montreal, Quebec, and a station in Toronto, Ontario opening two days later.
In these cases, the CBC programming being displaced may be broadcast at a different time than the network, or may not be broadcast on the station at all.
In English, the program is known as "Hockey Night in Canada", and in French, it is called "La soirée du hockey".

However, the network quickly ran into financial problems and was sold to Quebec cable company Vidéotron, who already owned TVA, Quebec's other private commercial network.
It is generally runner-up in the ratings to TVA, although the network has produced a number of major hit series in Quebec.
The network is not widely available outside of Quebec, although some communities in northern and eastern Ontario and in the Maritime Provinces receive TQS affiliates on cable, and the network affiliate in Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec does have a repeater in Edmundston, New Brunswick.

In 1928, General Electric received the first license for an experimental television broadcasting station, to be operated by WGY, the GE radio outlet in Schenectady, N.Y. A second experimental station, W2XBS, was established in New York in 1930 by the National Broadcasting Company, a subsidiary of RCA.
Programs created for syndication, because they were unproven and thus a riskier investment, were generally provided at no cost to the station, but rather for "barter.'' That means the producer or distributor would retain about half of the commercial spots in the program and sell them to national advertisers.
His syndicated program Donahue (began 1969) is noted for its contemporary and often controversial topics, which are covered in an innovative discussion format that encourages audience participation.
