The Kingdom of Thailand is a country in southeast Asia, bordering Laos and Cambodia to the east, the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia to the south, and the Andaman Sea and Myanmar to the west.
Thailand's origin is traditionally tied to the short-lived kingdom of Sukhothai founded in 1238, after which the larger kingdom of Ayutthaya was established in the mid-14th century.
Provinces are further subdivided into 795 districts (Amphoe), 81 sub-districts (King Amphoe) and 50 districts of Bangkok (khet) (number are for 2000), and furthermore into 7,236 communes (Tambon), 55,746 villages (Muban), 123 municipalities (Tesaban), and 729 sanitation districts (Sukhaphiban) (numbers are for 1984).

Provinces of Thailand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Bangkok is both the province with the highest population and the highest population density.
The provinces were administrated either by a governor, which was appointed by the king; or by a local ruling family, who were descendants of the old local kings and princes of that area and had been given this privilege by the central king.
New provinces were created when the population of an area outgrew the administration, but also for political reasons if a governor became too dominant in a region former satellite cities were elevated to provincial status, as in the founding of the Maha Sarakham Province.

GN Online: Thailand must steer free of radicalism trap
Thailand's Muslim minority is concentrated in the country's four southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Satun, and Yala, close to the northern border of Malaysia.
What made the position of the Thai government more embarrassing were the warnings given by the Western diplomatic missions in Bangkok to their nationals about being cautious and vigilant and even to avoid travelling to the south for the fear of a recurrence of the devastation that happened in Bali.
If this assumption is proved true, the developments in southern Thailand will be similar to the developments in the Muslim provinces of the Philippines where Abu Sayaf group is active, or the developments in other parts of the Philippines at the hands of the communist "New People's Army".
