In the history of rock music, psychedelic rock is a bridge from early blues-based rock to latter progressive rock and heavy metal, but it also drew heavily non-Western sources such as Indian music.
An inner core of the psychedelic style of rock that came to public attention in 1966-67 can be recognized by characteristic features such as modal melodies; esoteric lyrics often describing dreams, visions, or hallucinations; longer songs and lengthy instrumental solos.
Psychedelic rock was heavily affected by the contemporary interest in the music of India, particularly the raga form and the classical instrumental styles of Hindustani music, which was popularised in the west by The Beatles and Ravi Shankar.

Psychedelic music is a musical genre inspired by or attempting to replicate the mind-altering experience of drugs such as cannabis, psilocybin, mescaline, and especially LSD.
There were also less well known psychedelic bands in outlying regions, such as the 13th Floor Elevators and Bubble Puppy working out of Texas, and the Third Bardo in New York City, a group which had a brief revival in the 1990s.
Phish, active from the early 1980s, played psychedelic music with a strong jazz influence and a great deal of technical skill, utilizing elaborate modal melodies and complex rhythmic accompaniment.

Joseph Benzola -- Homemade Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Amanita Music, despite the impeccable pedigree of Benzola's wildly varied list of influences and inspirations, is music for which the average listener, lulled by commercial jazz and alternative rock, may have no point of reference whatsoever.
Amanita Music requires a certain perspective; when one can see the musical "big picture", apparent chaos resolves itself to be part of a greater plan made obvious by scale.
Thus Benzola's music grows neither randomly nor via written notes, but by a unique, logical progression the eventual understanding of which can be highly rewarding for the listener -- just the sort of mind-expanding experience of which Benzola speaks, as if music is an eminently more elegant analog of higher mathematics.

IGN: Brothers of the Head - Music From the Motion Picture Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
While creating a fictional band and then passing them off as the real thing is a tricky undertaking, filmmakers Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe had the foresight to capture an air of authenticity via the employment of the venerable Clive Langer.
The music has definitive ties to some of the aforementioned acts (vintage Clash, Buzzcocks, Pistols, etc.), but also keeps in tune with more recent offspring of British rock such as The Libertines.
Still, for a band that never existed, The Bang Bang delivers some otherwise memorable music that should quell the latent punk lurking in many an old geezer (and may just ignite a fire in the more inquisitive youth of the day).

 Davy O'List - Biography - AOL Music
A guitarist and singer who also played trumpet, O'List's first gig of any note was with the Attack, a psychedelic outfit that grew out of a band called Soul System.
He passed briefly through the lineup of the Misunderstood, and intersected with Pink Floyd just as that band was looking for a successor to Syd Barrett, whose personal instability due to drug use was becoming a major problem, but O'List only lasted a few gigs.
He next turned up with Roxy Music for one tour, and he subsequently played on Bryan Ferry's Another Time, Another Place LP in 1974 -- another recording, a single song with O'List, ended up on Let's Stick Together, but by 1975 he'd moved on to a short-lived association with the glitter rock cult band Jet.

Field Music (songwriting brothers Peter and David Brewis plus keyboard manipulator Andrew Moore) covered a lot of ground in 2006.
They also found time to invent a dance craze (according to English tabloid newspaper The News of the World), etch one side of a 7" with a list of things you really shouldn't do but probably have, release a cash-in-b-sides album which gave a brief and inaccurate history of a slew of pre-Field Music experiments.
On 'A House Is Not A Home' (Brewis, P) and first single 'In Context', Field Music could even be described as 'funky', albeit in a peculiarly singular avant-mackem way.
