Statistics is the science and practice of developing human knowledge through the use of empirical data.
It is based on statistical theory which is a branch of applied mathematics.
The word statistics comes from the modern Latin phrase statisticum collegium (lecture about state affairs), from which came the Italian word statista, which means "statesman" or "politician" (compare to status) and the German Statistik, originally designating the analysis of data about the state.

The RAND Statistics Group was established in 1976 to “enhance the quality of RAND research by making statistical expertise easily available to all members of the research staff.” The RAND Statistics Group currently has 17 Ph.D. and 7 Masters-level statisticians.
Statisticians conduct research and development of statistical methodology that is essential for RAND to remain at the cutting edge of policy analysis.

Single copies of publications currently in print in Arabic, Chinese and Russian are available at no charge to Governments and research institutions in statistics from the Director of the Statistics Division in New York, as long as stock is available.

This is a clearinghouse of information on recursive partitioning methods in statistics (more commonly known as "tree-based methods"), including CART, QUEST, C5.0, etc. Includes links to a handy bibliography list and a mailing list devoted to recursive partitioning issues.
Lists a couple of texts as "related book titles", but it's unclear if these books actually refer to this package, or if they just cover some of the methods implemented by the program.
