The band list for Warped Tour 2000 was released in early April, and once again, it's a pretty solid list of who's who in punk rock today, with some other genres thrown in, just to mix things up.
For years, punk rock existed as subculture that although was recognized by the mainstream, was not properly segmented as a genre that could be marketed to.
Punk rock kids were no different consumers than kids who went to Lollapalooza, or any other music festival, it was just that their musical interests were different - and they seemed to dig skateboarding.

This genre of metal produced the highest number of bands, so that it's sound is now so generic to sometimes be simply labeled "Heavy Metal" (no prefix), and considered the main branch of music from which most other genres split.
The vocals are either punk or death, the lyrical content usually deals with some topic of social unrest, and the music has the intensity of punk with the discipline of metal (i.e.: guitarists can play more than 3 chords).
Though the genre appeared quite a while ago in the form of Mayhem, it's popularity peak was from the mid nineties to the turn of the millenia.

You probably haven't heard of this band, as they had a very short career and their drummer, Aaron Cometbus, was better known as a writer, due to his zine "Cometbus." That said, they were one of the innovators of the California Bay Area sound, and a staple at the legendary venue, 924 Gilman Street.

Essentially, Punk Revival bands were all traditionalists -- they kept alive the sounds and styles of groups like the Sex Pistols, the Stooges, the Jam, the Exploited, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, the Descendents, and countless other punk and hardcore bands.
Since hardcore mutated into speed metal in the late '80s, it wasn't surprising that these punk traditionalists were heavier than their initial influences, but that is partially what made the music appealing to a mass audience in America -- it was simpler and heavier, much like a faster, harder outgrowth of grunge rock.

No, the styles in the alternative list above are not really all "alternative", and the ones in the rock list are not really all "rock".

Though the two genres are different, they are often hard to distinguish.
Acid jazz tends to have a more dance-type edge (bordering on what today we call "Trip-Hop," except with more live instrumentation) whereas Hip-Hop/Jazz has more of a hip-ho p element and rhythm but often lapses into classic or contemporary jazz styles.
