In music or music theory, quartal is the quality of a chord made from fourths, and other things constructed from fourths, such as counterpoint.
The quartal numeral system is the base four system, and uses the digits 0-3.
Quartal numerals can be made from binary numerals by grouping consecutive digits into pairs (from right).

The irony of this piece is that it doesn't sound as out of place as you would think it would.

I sometimes just approach a piece as a painting, and then I have some structures that help keep track of what is happening, sometimes I think of it more as pitches, and then I like the recitative style atmosphere modes create.
In fact a plate reverb works on much the same principle, except that the hall is a piece of plate steel, and the driver is used instead of a speaker.
One definition of atonality I like is "few chords, lots of space", because this pieces either stay a long time in the same chord, or change chord very quickly, all to avoid the listner to "grab" to a specific tonality the music is passing by.

At the time I suspected it was a word from mathematics, but I was actually thinking of quartal harmonies, which are chords built on successive fourths.
I'm surprised at the number of former and current journalist types on the list of participants, myself included.
