Ragtime was preceded by its close relative the Cakewalk, but the emergence of mature ragtime is usually dated to 1897, the year in which several important early rags were published.
Ragtime is usually seen as one of the main precursors of jazz (along with the blues).
Ragtime is mostly associated with the piano, but was and is also performed on other instruments, such as the guitar or banjo, or by groups of musicians.

There is an unfortunate dearth of biographical information for most of the women listed here, as the head of a household was usually the one polled for census or survey demographics, leaving little opportunity for details of the female family members to surface.
She was a rather prolific composer for the publisher turning out a reported 35 titles, but initially without recognition of her gender to the general public.
Since ragtime was THE most popular music form at this time, it is not only likely that she knew popular songs and piano rags, but that she felt inclined to write something as well.

There is speculation that pieces attributed to other composers might be by Cobb, with Leo Gordon being his primary alternate name, and that some of the compositions from this time were simply not at the same level as his more notable sheet music pieces because of the rigors of contribution and editing deadlines.

The "majestic mood" of Ragtime Night in gale (to quote Jasen and Tichenor in Rags and Ragtime) is evident through out the piece, with the relaxed tempo and beautiful, flowing melody that one expects from a rag written by the likes of Joplin, Lamb and Scott.
Paul Pratt was another of the Indiana rag composers, and this (for the first time on a recut!) is one of the rags Paul Pratt wrote and arranged exclusively for piano roll.
Jamaica Jinger is listed in Rags and Ragtime by virtue of the fact that Van Alstyne slows the piece way down for the final section of this roll.
