List of rapid transit systems - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is an alphabetical list of cities worldwide that have a rapid transit system, or a light-rail system with some elements of rapid transit.
Rapid transit (heavy rail) is generally defined by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) as "high-speed, passenger rail cars operating singly or in trains of two or more cars on fixed rails in separate right-of-way from which all other vehicular and foot traffic are excluded.

Rapid transit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A rapid transit, underground, subway, tube, elevated, or metro(politan) system is a railway system, usually in an urban area, with a high capacity and frequency of service, and grade separation from other traffic.
A notable example is the Paris RER system, where (in co-operation with the city's transit authority) several pairs of existing suburban lines running in opposite directions from the city have been extended in tunnel to join up and form new through routes across the city.
Before any plans were made for transit systems with underground tunnels and stations, several railway operators built tunnels for their trains, usually to reduce the grade of the railway line.

 rapid transit - HighBeam Encyclopedia
RAPID TRANSIT [rapid transit] transportation system designed to allow passenger travel within or throughout an urban area, usually employing surface, elevated, or underground railway systems or some combination of these.
Rapid transit systems are generally considered to be mass transit systems, capable of moving large numbers of passengers in a single train.
The principal problem to be solved in an urban rapid transit system is that of providing extra capacity to handle the volume of traffic during the morning and evening rush hours without unreasonable delays.

Rapid Heart -- Recommendations and Resources   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
A rapid is a section of a river where it loses elevation over a relatively short distance (that is, the ''stream gradient'' is locally steepened), causing an increase in water flow and (usually) turbulence.
Rapids occur where the bed material is highly resistant to the erosive power of the stream in comparison with the bed downstream of the rapids.
Conversely, those who prefer the American "rapid transit" or the newer term "metro" tend to view this as a less important characteristic and are pleased to include systems that are entirely elevated or at ground level (''at grade'') as long as the other criteria are met.

Chicago 'L' - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The CTA website says "CTA’s train system is called the ‘L’, short for 'elevated.'" Networked as a series of rail lines, the Chicago Elevated connects downtown Chicago with eight adjacent suburban cities, towns and villages.
These are the only 24-hour lines in the system, but having them makes it distinctive, along with the New York City Subway and the Port Authority Trans-Hudson, as one of the only 24-hour rapid transit systems in the world.
The use of 'L' for the entire system, derived from the common "el" as short for "elevated railroad" dates back to the system's earliest days and is used as a formal moniker in the same way that "Subway" (with a capital "S") is used to refer to the New York City Subway, even where elevated.

New York City Subway - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The first line of the city-owned and operated Independent Subway System (IND) opened in 1932; this system was intended to compete with the private systems and allow some of the elevated railways to be torn down.
Although certain stations close overnight or on weekends, the New York City subway is the only rapid transit system in the world, with the exception of the PATH which connects New Jersey with Manhattan, and parts of the Chicago 'L', that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
In 1994, the subway system introduced a fare system called the MetroCard, which allows riders to use cards that store the value equal to the amount paid to a station booth clerk or to a vending machine.

Transit 2020 Plan: A Strategic Plan for Public Transportation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The primary purpose of Transit 2020 is to support the development of a transit system that provides Floridians and visitors with an effective, efficient and customer-friendly transit service in a transit-friendly environment.
Existing transit services can fairly be characterized as marginal due to limited service hours, infrequent service, and lack of service to many employment centers, commerce, education and recreation, particularly in the suburbs.
Transit performance is ultimately affected by a number of planning and policy related factors including land use, institutional practices and public perception.

Bus Rapid Transit projects can utilize a wide range of federal formula, discretionary and earmark programs as part of their funding sources to help fill this funding need.

Transit on the Woodward Corridor: Our Economic Engine is the second in a series of forums initiated by the 2030 Vision Project, a collaborative endeavor focusing on envisioning a future of Greater Detroit that represents where the region wants to go rather than where it is currently heading.
Exploring the economic boosts that follow smart growth and the importance of integrating social and ecological concerns within the planning process, efficient transit is often noted as critical to economic growth to regions like ours that are stagnated by sprawl and inefficient planning.
The purpose of this forum is to ‘make the business case' for transit — that is, to demonstrate through analysis, through numerical and analogical data, and through convincing case studies that reliable and efficient transit fosters positive growth in communities.

Getting Urban Transit Systems Focused on Cost and Service
Despite multi-billion dollar subsidies and frequent fare increases, many of America’s urban transit systems face widening operating deficits, and some are near the brink of financial collapse.
Despite decades of generous subsidies, urban transit ridership is less than 2 percent of the overall urban passenger market and less than 5 percent of the commuter market.
In the world of local transit, the Virginia Rail Express is considered an efficient system, despite its reliance on subsidies large enough to buy each of its passengers a mid-size car.
