Real analysis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Real analysis is a branch of mathematical analysis dealing with the set of real numbers and functions of real numbers.
The presentation of real analysis in advanced texts usually starts with simple proofs in elementary set theory, a clean definition of the concept of function, and an introduction to the natural numbers and the important proof technique of mathematical induction.
Various important types of subsets of the real numbers, such as open sets, closed sets, compact sets and their properties are introduced next, such as the Bolzano-Weierstrass and Heine-Borel theorems.

This can be a problem in some cases, such as common texts for a first course in real analysis where topological ideas are covered for Euclidean space first and then again for general metric spaces, but with measure theory, this is the right approach.

Prepare yourself for an intellectual journey as we explore the real number system, and see how 19th century mathematicians dealt with the problems of explaining the underlying nature of the Calculus, problems which took the best mathematicians 200 years to solve.
Topics: The first semester (MAT 420) will be topics from chapters 2-5, analyzing the nature of the real numbers, sequences, limits, and continuity.

The Mellennium Symposium   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
These symposia are considered to be the premier conferences of their type by members of the real analysis community, and are the only classical real analysis conferences which traditionally draw participants from North America, Western Europe, Eastern and Central Europe, and the countries of the former Soviet Union.
Long taught as a core course at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, classical real analysis is regaining its more traditional role as a central player at the intellectual root of both modern applied and pure mathematics.
Information concerning this conference was placed on the real analysis web page (http://www.stolaf.edu/people/analysis) in May, 1999 and preregistration indicates that a majority of the most active research real analysts will attend the 2000 Summer Symposium.

Baseball Prospectus | Articles | The Class of 2004

Those 3,000 hits (3,319 actually, good for ninth on the all-time list) aren't the only reason Molly's worthy, but they're an amazing accomplishment in light of the injury woes which plagued his career and followed him around the diamond from shortstop to second base to centerfield to third base.
When he played, the man could hit (how about 30 HR in 95 games for Cincy in 1994?), but he didn't play all that much, and as his career went on, the stories just kept getting more bizarre (though the one about him chopping the head off of a cat dated from his rookie year).
