If the Chief Electoral Officer approves, a proponent has 60 days to gather signatures from 40 percent of those on the list of electors for that electoral district in the last election who are currently registered to vote.

Typically, electoral areas are rural, and this is the case, by and large, with Electoral Area A, which in fact is made up of several disparate pieces, including a couple of islands.
As the local government authority, the GVRD has developed an Official Community Plan for Electoral Area A. Putting the plan’s broad policy statements into effect at UBC is left to the university administration under a Memorandum of Understanding, basically a handshake agreement, between the GVRD and UBC.

The present Malahat-Juan de Fuca electoral district is so diverse in topographic, economic, and social factors as to make it almost impossible for an MLA to represent its interests in the Legislature.
The two areas of Langford-Colwood and Sooke (which, together, had 22,825 registered voters for the last election) should be joined to other areas south of the Malahat Summit to form a new Western Communities electoral district.
The Malahat area (which had 16,220 registered voters for the last election) should be joined to the Duncan, Chemainus, Lake Cowichan, Crofton, and Sahtlam areas, which, together, could be renamed the Cowichan Valley electoral district.
