One of the principal pioneers of modern relief pitching, he was the outstanding reliever in the National League during the late 1950s and 1960s, setting numerous records.
He was the first major leaguer to save 20 games more than once, leading the league three times and finishing second three times; in 1959 he set the still-standing major league record for winning percentage (.947) with 18 wins against only 1 loss.
His most spectacular season came in 1959, when he posted his remarkable 18-1 record, including 17 victories in a row to begin the year after ending 1958 with 5 in a row; he did not surrender a run in the entire month from June 11 to July 12.

Historically, he became only the second pitcher to save 50 games in a season, the first pitcher to save 40 games four times, holds the AL records for most games pitched with 869, most saves with 324, and most consecutive errorless games by a pitcher with 470.

Eric Gagne had the most dominating performance by any relief pitcher in the history of the game, and he was rewarded for it with the NL Cy Young Award — the first one given to a reliever since 1992.
He will start the 2004 season trying to continue a streak of 62 consecutive converted saves, which is a major league record.
Gagne has 107 saves in two seasons, a record amount for a two-year period.
