Kneeland, born in 1774 in Gardner, Mass., experienced periods of religious doubt throughout a young adulthood that included pastorates as a Baptist preacher in Vermont and a Universalist preacher in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
In 1833 a convention of workingmen from all of New England was held in Boston.
Recognizing the importance that the later American freethought leader Robert Ingersoll attached to these cases in his defense of Charles B. Reynolds for blasphemy, the latter paper analyzes the arguments advanced in the blasphemy trials of George Holyoake and Abner Kneeland.

The principal religious innovation produced by the Kentucky revivals was the camp meeting.
The religious revivals that swept the Kentucky camp meetings were so intense and created such gusts of emotion that their original sponsors, the Presbyterians, as well the Baptists, soon repudiated them.
In 1839 J. Maze Burbank exhibited at the Royal Society in London this watercolor of "a camp meeting, or religious revival in America, from a sketch taken on the spot." It is not known where, when, or under whose auspices the revival painted by Burbank occurred.

Twenty-six years before William Penn, the Quaker leader who founded Philadelphia set foot in the New World in 1682, a few Jews were trading with the Native Americans along the South River of the New Netherlands (later known as the Delaware River).
On March 4, 1681, King Charles II of England signed the patent that granted William Penn, leader of the Quakers, land between New York and Maryland, west of the Delaware River.
Leaders of Mikveh Israel and their family members were buried in the cemetery on Spruce Street.

She does not appear in the official king's lists but it is generally agreed that she ruled after her brother Akaba (1685-1704) and was followed on the throne by another brother, Agaja, and became one of Abomey (or Dahomey)'s most important rulers, who reigned until 1740.
She was highly skilled in the supernatural, and she is believed to have been responsible for drastically changing the religious life of the kingdom.
