  Readers Choice Rifle Cartridges
Most readers have probably noticed that on the "Rifle Cartridge Page" of Guns and Shooting Online there are articles about all of the popular sporting cartridges in widespread use in North America (and much of the world, since Guns and Shooting Online has an international audience), as well as many of the less popular cartridges.
These are the cartridges in which the greatest number of you, the readers, have been most interested.
Interest in the cartridge remains high, probably partly due to its romantic association with the Old West, and partly because it is one of the best 200 yard deer and medium game cartridges ever designed.

The.30-06 Springfield cartridge (pronounced 'thirty aught six') is a.308 inch (7.82 mm) (.300 inch is 7.62 mm) caliber rifle round, also known as the 7.62 × 63 mm, introduced to the United States Army in 1906 (hence '-06') and standardized, with use continuing into the 1960s, tapering off in the 1960s and early 1970s.
The M1903 Springfield rifle, introduced alongside the earlier cartridge, was quickly modified to accept the.30-06.
The.30-06 remained the US Army's main cartridge for nearly 50 years before it was finally replaced by the 7.62 x 51 mm (7.62mm NATO, commercial.308 Winchester) with the adoption of the M14 in 1954.

True rifling dates from the mid-15th century, although the precision required for its effective manufacture kept it out of the hands of infantrymen for another three and a half centuries, when it largely replaced the unrifled musket as the primary infantry weapon.
Cartridge design evolved from simple paper tubes containing fl powder and shot to sealed brass cases with integral primers for ignition, while fl powder itself was replaced with cordite, and then other smokeless mixtures, propelling bullets to higher velocities than before.
The adoption of cartridges and breech-loading in the 19th century was concurrent with general adoption of rifles.

In a rifled barrel the distance is measured between the lands.
If the measurement is in inches then the caliber (abbreviated to cal) is quoted as decimal of an inch, so a (smallbore) rifle with a diameter of 0.22 inch is a.22 cal ("twenty-two caliber").
In the middle of the 19th century, muskets and muzzle-loading rifles were.58 cal or larger.

This true story is a typical “campfire story.” In it, the animal, the hunter and his cartridge are all equal players – the outcome being the mere result of a good or (in this case) bad combination.
The right cartridge at the right time can spell success and give you bragging rights for a lifetime – while the opposite can lead to unpleasant results, from a costly disappointment (in the form of a lost trophy) to paying the ultimate price.
In a less dramatic sense, rifle cartridges are also used to express a hunter’s preference for a certain concept (e.g.

 10 mm - FirearmWiki
When Norma designed the cartridge, at the behest of Dornaus and Dixon for their Bren Ten pistol (a strengthened variant of the CZ-75), they decided to increase the power over Cooper's original concept.
The resulting cartridge, introduced in 1983, is very powerful, packing the flat trajectory and high energy of a magnum revolver cartridge into a relatively short, rimless cartridge for an automatic pistol.
Today the 10mm Auto cartridge is used to fend off medium-sized dangerous animals, and for hunting, especially by those who prefer the flatter carry profile and higher cartridge capacity of the automatic pistol vis-à-vis the magnum revolver.
