ofr87-242--Largest Rivers in the United States
Rivers are considered large on the basis of one or more of three characteristics: total length from source to mouth, area of basin (watershed) drained by the stream, and average rate of flow (discharge) at the mouth.
River lengths or river-length data are affected not only by some of the natural and artificial causes noted in the preceding paragraph, but also by the precision of various techniques of measurement, by the scale of available maps or aerial photographs, and by somewhat arbitrary decisions.
For example, the length may be considered to be the distance from the mouth to the most distant headwater source (irrespective of stream name) or from the mouth to the headwaters of the stream commonly identified as the source stream.

 The Salinity of Rivers
The saltiness of rivers is simply a matter of the relative amount of water that is turned into water vapor through consumption, whether it is natural or the result of human activity.
Before man began harnessing the rivers the seasonal floods were highly effective in carrying salts to the ocean and keeping the river basin in reasonably good salt balance.
It is the third-longest river in the U.S., yet like the Colorado it does not qualify for inclusion in the Geological Survey list of 33 rivers with the highest discharge.

Eastern Recreational Rivers Study - Phase II Seventy-five percent of the rivers initially listed were deleted through the course of "Phase I" largely due to the amount of development within the river corridor.
This is because a river segment, when studied for possible inclusion in the Wild and Scenic River System, must be judged as it is found to exist at the time of the study, rather than as it may exist as some future time.

In the case of the lynx, a distinct population segment means that lynx in the lower 48 United States are considered discreet in that this population is delineated by an international political boundary that coincides with differences in status and management.
