Rock and roll (also known as rock 'n' roll), is a defined supergenre of music that originated in the United States in the 1950s, and quickly spread to the rest of the world.
In the earliest form of rock and roll, the late 1940s, the piano was the lead instrument, and indeed, rock and roll was a direct outgrowth of boogie woogie piano of the big band era of Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and others that dominated the music business of the 1940s.
Rock and roll emerged as a defined musical style in America in the late 1940s, when it was called RandB, and, with the present name, in the early 1950s, though elements of rock and roll can be heard in blues records as far back as the 1920s.

Rock and Roll emerged as a defined musical style in America in the 1950s, though elements of rock and roll can be seen in rhythm and blues records as far back as the 1920s.
The culmination of rock and roll as a socially-unifying force was seen in the rock festivals of the late '60s, the most famous of which was Woodstock which began as a three-day arts and music festival and turned into a "happening", as hundreds of thousands of youthful fans converged on the site.
While mainstream rock music was no longer able to shock or offend, new forms of music, particularly Punk rock and Rap emerged to fill this role; people who as youths delighted in the effect rock and roll had on their parents found themselves railing in a similar fashion against their children's music.

Rock music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rock is a form of popular music from the late 20th century which typically features a vocal melody (often with vocal harmony) that is supported by accompaniment of electric guitars, a bass guitar, and drums, often with a strong back beat.
The culmination of rock and roll as a socially-unifying force was seen in the rock festivals of the late '60s, the most famous of which was Woodstock which began as a three-day arts and music festival and turned into a "happening", as hundreds of thousands of youthful fans converged on the site.
Currently popular rock trends include a style of pop-punk that is often referred to as emo (though some disagree with that label), which draws its style from softer punk and alternative rock styles from the 1980s.

Alternative rock is a form of rock and roll that has developed over the last few years as a reaction to the commercial nature rock music took on during the 1980s.
Rock is instrumental in youth's ability to construct a culture that is distinct from mainstream culture.
He begins by explaining that alternative rock is a rebuttal to the "selling-out" attitude of the previous generation and a return to the spontaneity and crispness that rock posessed in the 1950s and 1960s.

When the list of inductees was announced, I questioned the choice of this band and received considerable, well-reasoned flak from Traffic/Dave Mason fans when I suggested that there were more deserving artists who could have taken this spot this year (which I still believe).
The group made some critically acclaimed albums throughout the 1970s but fell on commercial hard times through much of the '80s, limiting output, though fans still flocked to see their performances.
