Pitchfork Feature: Top 100 Albums of the 1980s
It's said that the 1980s are responsible for the worst fashion, fads, and music of any decade of the 20th century.
The main thrust of the album was more psychedelic, using the claustrophobic tightness of punk and the vastness of Americana as head-metaphors, analogies for two distinct states of being really goddamn freaked out.
At the time of this album's release, Richard Meltzer called X, "the only punk band with half a chance at commercial success in America today." Truth is, they never had a prayer; they were better than that.

Rock and Roll emerged as a defined musical style in America in the 1950s, though elements of rock and roll can be seen in rhythm and blues records as far back as the 1920s.
Early rock and roll combined elements of blues, boogie woogie, jazz and rhythm and blues, and is also influenced by traditional folk music, gospel music, fl and white, and country and western.
While mainstream rock music was no longer able to shock or offend, new forms of music, particularly Punk rock and Rap emerged to fill this role; people who as youths delighted in the effect rock and roll had on their parents found themselves railing in a similar fashion against their children's music.

Rock music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rock is a form of popular music from the late 20th century which typically features a vocal melody (often with vocal harmony) that is supported by accompaniment of electric guitars, a bass guitar, and drums, often with a strong back beat.
The genre of rock music is broad, and its boundaries loosely-defined, with related genres such as soul and funk sometimes being included in the definition of the term.
The culmination of rock and roll as a socially-unifying force was seen in the rock festivals of the late '60s, the most famous of which was Woodstock which began as a three-day arts and music festival and turned into a "happening", as hundreds of thousands of youthful fans converged on the site.

Alternative rock is a form of rock and roll that has developed over the last few years as a reaction to the commercial nature rock music took on during the 1980s.
Rock emerged when the music industry was seeking to exploit a new market, and the youth audience was simultaneously seeking a medium that would allow it to express itself.
He begins by explaining that alternative rock is a rebuttal to the "selling-out" attitude of the previous generation and a return to the spontaneity and crispness that rock posessed in the 1950s and 1960s.
