The single "Like a Rolling Stone" was a U.S. and UK hit, cementing his reputation as a lyricist; at over six minutes, devoid of a bridge, the song also helped to expand the limits of hit radio.
Dylan's 1978 album Street Legal was lyrically one of his more complex and absorbing; it suffered, however, from a poor sound mix (attributed to his studio recording practices), submerging much of its instrumentation in the sonic equivalent of cotton wadding until its remastered CD release nearly a quarter century later.
Late that spring, before the album's release, Dylan was hospitalized with a life-threatening heart infection, pericarditis, brought on by histoplasmosis.

However, alternative rock also emerged as an influential genre, with independent artists such as 54-40, The Tragically Hip, Sarah McLachlan, Skinny Puppy, Spirit of the West, Cowboy Junkies, The Pursuit of Happiness, and The Grapes of Wrath all gaining their First widespread attention during this time.
