A rocket-powered aircraft or rocket plane is an aircraft that uses a rocket for propulsion, sometimes in addition to airbreathing jet engines.
The only rocket plane ever to be mass-produced was the Messerschmitt Me 163 in 1944, one of several German World War II attempts at rocket-powered aircraft.
The rocket was the main engine for delivering the speed and height required for high speed interception of high level bombers and the turbojet gave increased fuel economy in other parts of flight, most notably to make sure the aircraft was able to make a powered landing rather than risking an unpredictable gliding return.

  Bell X-1
On October 14, 1947, Charles "Chuck" Yeager of the USAF flew this aircraft.
The rocket powered aircraft was launched from the belly of a specially modified B-29 and glided to a landing on a runway.
Honored at the White House by President Truman were Larry Bell for Bell Aircraft, Captain Yeager for piloting the flights, and John Stack of NACA for the NACA contributions.

Rocket tests later demonstrated that 1/3rd scale models of the M.52 were capable of stable flight at Mach 1.5.
The key difference between the two aircraft was that the M.52 had a turbofan equipped with a reheat-pipe (afterburner), rather than a liquid fuel rocket, and was capable of taking off and landing under its own power.
Aircraft number #48-1386 was the first of the second generation of supersonic rocket planes.

In the latter, the fuel gradually burned off (as it did in early gunpowder rockets), and the entire fuel container was under pressure, supplying hot gas directly to the De-Laval nozzle.
The military's rockets were larger and more ambitious, and the A2 which flew in 1934 developed a thrust of 16000 newton.
The usual payload of the V-2 rocket was one ton (1000 kg), and with that a height of about 100 km was possible.

The plane earned its X-designation in July, shortly before construction of the vehicle was completed, Northrop said in a press statement.

Already eliminated from the list of internally carried stores are older unguided weapons like the Mk 82/83/84 general purpose bombs since it is very unlikely that the services would need to send the plane on a stealthy mission while carrying such archaic weapons.

The North American X-15 rocket plane was perhaps the most important of the USAF/NASA/USN X-series of experimental aircraft, after only possibly the Bell X-1.
The original Request for Proposals was issued for the airframe December 30, 1954, and for the rocket engine on February 4, 1955.
The two XLR-11 rocket engines of the initial model X-15A delivered 36 kN (8,000 lbf) of thrust; the "real" engine that came later was a single XLR-99 that delivered 254 kN (57,000 lbf) at sea level, and 311 kN (70,000 lbf) at peak altitude.

The best solution to this is to align the rocket's antenna perpendicular to the length of the rocket (parallel with the ground) and to have the receiver's antenna as close to the launcher as possible.
