Role-playing game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original form of role-playing game was the fantasy wargame, inspired by sword and sorcery fiction and utilizing miniature figurines and scaled terrain grids to illustrate action in a way similar to that of tactical wargames.
Freeform role-playing games are a subgenre of LARP with minimal rules and a greater focus on character development.
Because historical games often overlap the fantasy genre, a distinguishing mark is that fantasy games are set on a "fantasy world" similar to but distinct from Earth, while historical games are set in the past of Earth.

 Open Directory - Games:Roleplaying
This category primarily covers what are often called tabletop roleplaying games (because they are typically played sitting around a table, with books and dice) but also includes its pen-and-paper descendants, live action roleplaying (where players dress up and physically act out their characters' actions) and gamebook roleplaying (system-based interactive fiction).
Live action roleplaying (a term often shortened into LARP or LRP) is a form of roleplaying where the participants do not merely verbally describe their actions, but actually carry them out (or pretend to do so).
Roleplayers traditionally view their hobby as one divorced from "the real world", a second life lived in imaginary worlds, with little regard for societal issues outside the game.

A guide to Roleplaying - What, Who, Why & Where?
When you were young one of the games you played may have been let's pretend where you pretended to be a doctor or a character from a film or television program etc. Roleplaying (or RPG) is the natural extension of that childhood game.
Roleplay allows you to become (for a short while anyway) a fighter in a mystical land, a private investigator in search of horrible creatures or a Magic user fighting to save the world.
Some Roleplayers take Roleplaying to the extreme and meet on private land and for long weekends live the parts of their characters (they also attack each other with rubber swords but we will not talk about that too much) this is called LRP (Live Roleplaying) or LARP (Live Action Roleplay).

The author says very clearly that "This game isn't for kids; it's for grownups." But in truth, it can be great fun for kids as long as they're not too impressionable or easily frightened, and the GM plays it with a light, humourous attitude.

This can be as simple as buying a pre-made setting or adventure (which most game companies publish for use with their games), or as complex as creating a completely original game world.
For most games, each player will bring his or her character sheet for the game, a form filled out with the various attributes which describe their Player Characters in terms of the game's rules -- for example, how strong each character is, how smart, how fast, what sorts of skills they have, and so on.
