Role-playing game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because the terms "role-playing game" and "RPG" have both to some degree been co-opted by the computer gaming industry, traditional non-digital pastimes of this sort are increasingly being referred to as pen and paper role-playing games (PnP RPG or PPRPG) or tabletop role-playing games (TTRPG).
The oldest form of role-playing games were fantasy wargames, so named because participants used miniature figurines and scaled terrain grids to illustrate action in a way similar to that of tactical wargames.
This makes role-playing games fundamentally different from board games, card games, sports and most other types of games.

The game is pure role playing: when a player want to do an action, instead of looking for a skill and for the character statistics, he must explain how and why its character can/know how to do that action, so adding a peace of history/past to his character.
all the role playing games are based or starts from those general concepts only improving skills, magics and changing the relationship between skills and character's stats.

Professionally marketed video games are also expensive when you consider the overall cost and time committment and most educational games don't foresee the same profit margin and therefore cannot invest as much in the project.
