The Good Shepherd Institute: Pastoral Theology and Sacred Music for the Church
We all know that during the baroque period it is Bach who became its most tragic victim, the conflict being related in Germany partly to the lack of institutions appropriate for the style of the epoch.
Inasmuch as he himself as a youth in his home had come to understand the singing of hymns, of sacred songs, to be part of his daily activities, so he wanted the larger issues of church music to be taken as acts of the religious life and not as phenomena of pure art.
Whether Herder formulated these ideas under the influence of Friedrich Bach acting as an intermediary to make Herder acquainted with Johann Sebastian Bach, or whether he arrived independently at Bach’s form of the cantata on the strength of his own liturgical considerations, is open to question.

 Bach's Manuscripts
Take Telemann's cantata 'Alles redet itzt und singet' for example: it is a cantata in praise of nature, which one would consider 'secular' at first, but there are references to God as creator in it and ends with an encouragement to praise God.
Bach wrote with very acidic ink which burns holes in the paper he used and the Staatsbibliothek needs to store the manuscripts at -40oC to halt the deterioration.

Music Essays - Telemann: A Forgotten Master
Since the day when the greatness of Johann Sebastian Bach was admitted, all that was great in his lifetime has become less than nothing.
It was at Eisenach, where Johann Bernhard Bach was organist, that Telemann entered into relations with Johann Sebastian Bach, and in 1714 he was godfather to one of his sons, Karl Philipp Emanuel.
At these concerts Telemann produced all those works of his, sacred or profane, public or private, which had already been performed elsewhere, not to speak of works especially written for the concerts: psalms, oratorios, cantatas, and instrumental pieces.

Performance of Bach's Vocal Works - General Discussions - Part 15
Regarding the obituary of Bach by CPE Bach et al, I have discussed Thomas' translation of "lebhaft" with my German wife, who confirmed that this would more usually be translated as "lively" and that "passionate" would be a translation one would consider more when referring to a person who argued his case in conversation "lebhaft".
Most of the recordings we discuss on this list are good to a reasonable degree, eg good intonation, correct notes etc etc. What you seem to be saying, and what I find so offensive and simplistic, is that HIP performances are, generally speaking, bad.

The Viola da Gamba in the Paintings of Vermeer
General surveys were given by Sebastian Virdung in his Musica getutscht (1511) or by Martin Agricola who hinted at the southern origins of viols in his Musica instrumentalis deudsch (1528, rev. 1545), describing them as "grosse welschen Geygen" ("large Italian fiddles").
But the viol was also present in secular cantatas by Johann Gottlieb Graun or Johann Adolf Hasse, as well as in numerous continuo "Lieder" (songs) by Heinrich Albert or Georg Neumark.
The Netherlandish viol school was represented mainly by the outstanding virtuoso and composer Johannes Schenck (1660-1712), whose four surviving viol publications show an early synthesis of French, German and Italian styles and are of extraordinary virtuosity.

Bach scholarship has advanced significantly in the last ten to fifteen years, and conductors such as Andrew Parrott have made great strides in discovering new facts about Bach's works, as well as new ways to perform them (for instance, instead of a mixed choir of over sixteen individuals, Bach apparently utilized only four).
