Science fiction is story-telling, usually imaginative as distinct from realistic fiction, which poses the effects of current or extrapolated scientific discoveries, or a single discovery, on the behavior of individuals of society.
Science fiction is a branch of fantasy identifiable by the fact that it eases the "willing suspension of disbelief" on the part of its readers by utilizing an atmosphere of scientific credibility for its imaginative speculations in physical science, space, time, social science, and philosophy.
Science fiction is that branch of fantasy, which, while not true to present-day knowledge, is rendered plausible by the reader's recognition of the scientific possibilities of it being possible at some future date or at some uncertain point in the past.

I was checking this list, and found an author listed as a Mormon, wich in that particular case surprised me a lot.
As I read the list of SF authors that Brad supplied, the grouping of Mormons included several authors who were not Mormon, but who were Utah residents and/or had been strongly influenced by the Mormon faith, among whom was L. Modesitt.

As you might expect from the title, the book is a guide to science fiction film, from the very first SF film in 1902, to this summer's biggest science fiction extravaganzas.
That's 103 years of science fiction film in 325 pages, including the index (lovingly indexed, I'll note, by the super-competent and generally awesome Susan Marie Groppi).
Of course, you could say that science fiction and fantasy are both setting genres, while monster movies are character genres, allowing the movies to comfortably fit into both catagories.
