Soft science fiction is the subgenre where plots and themes tend to focus on philosophy, psychology, politics and sociology while de-emphasizing the details of technological hardware and physical laws.
The European brand of science fiction proper began, however, toward the end of the 19th century with the scientific romances of Jules Verne, whose science was rather on the level of invention, as well as the science-oriented novels of social criticism by H.G. Wells.
The principal science fiction awards are the Hugo and Nebula.

The best science bloggers will be able to also write well, translating difficult scientese into ordinary language, thus removing some of the mystique that keeps people afraid of science, as well as demostrating how science works and how controversies and food-fights are the best generators of new ideas and cool findings.

The Arthur C. Clarke Award is awarded every year to the best science fiction novel which received its first British publication during the previous calendar year.

The Methuselah Mouse Prize, or M Prize as it is popularly known, offers awards to researchers who make significant advances in extending the lives of lab mice -- on the assumption that the work will lead eventually to extended human life.
Funds for the M Prize are solicited from individuals, including a growing group that have pledged to contribute $1,000 a year for the next 25 years.
A Longevity Prize will awarded whenever the record for the world's oldest mouse is beaten, with the cash doled out being related to the size of the fund at the time.

 Library: science fiction and fantasy awards
When the 2006 World Fantasy Award Nominees were announced earlier this month, science fiction publisher Prometheus Books said they were pleased to see that three of the six people nominated in the category Special Award: Professional were affiliated with their press.
Fans of science fiction, fantasy, and horror will be able to nominate and vote for the Best Interactive Video Game as part of the 2006 Hugo Awards, fandom's version of the Oscars, to be held during the 64th World Science Fiction Convention in August, 2006.
Voting for the Hugo Awards is open to all adult attending and supporting members of Interaction, the 63rd World Science Fiction Convention, which takes place in Glasgow from 4th to 8th August 2005.

 The John W. Campbell Award
The Nebula Awards are voted on by some hundred of the nearly three thousand members of the Science Fiction Writers of America and presented at the annual Nebula Award meeting usually held late in April.

Since the majority of science fiction fans have probably never heard of him, they may wonder why, in light of the fact that Gunn has never won a major award for his fiction, although he has come close.
As all literary award systems are flawed, it should come as no surprise that the most important novels are not always selected.
It is about genre -- multiple genres actually, encompassing science fiction (primarily of the H.G. Wells variety), mystery, Victorian romance with a dash of Gothic horror, all with a bit of tongue planted firmly in cheek -- a timeworn phrase perhaps, but one that is nonetheless particularly apt.
