Foster on Film - Science Fiction
Fantasy (of which Science Fiction is a sub-genre) is belittled by supporters of "the main stream," both in literature and in film.
Science Fiction is a much larger genre than Film Noir or Swashbucklers, overlapping almost all other genres (there are SF mysteries, SF Swashbucklers, SF Film Noir, SF Westerns, SF war films, SF comedies, and SF romances, to name a few).
Comparing this list with the ones I made for Film Noir and Swashbucklers points an important difference between Science Fiction film and those genres: the golden ages of those two genres are past while SF is still doing fine.

 Promise of Science: Space Travel
Leaving the planet Earth is one of the first motifs to appear in science fiction film -- in fact, the first film to be labelled science fiction is about travelling from the Earth to the Moon.
Although many aspects of this film's story are completely fantastic (such as men walking on the moon without space suits), the affair of space travel is serious and attempts to be true to known science.
This film is set far in the future, when men have explored many of the far reaches of the universe.

Since the 1960s, major science fiction films have succeeded in pulling in large audience shares, and films of this genre have become a regular staple of the film industry.
Science fiction films have led the way in special effects technology, and have also been used as a vehicle for social commentary.
The conspiracy thriller film was a popular staple of this period, where the paranoia of plots by the national government or corporate entities had replaced the implied communist enemy of the 1950s.

Its use of science is sketchy at best - light-speed travel is dealt with by the use of a "hyperspace" where the normal laws of physics don't seem to apply and force-wielding Jedi fight with theoretically impossible lightsabers - but the emphasis here is certainly not on answering the problems of the human condition.
One of a few films to deal with problems of time travel, such as the grandfather paradox: if you travel back in time and kill your grandfather, you wouldn't exist so wouldn't be able to travel back in time to...
The science behind the fiction is conspicuously absent, being replaced with the permanently befuddled Keanu Reeves stumbling around being confused by nonsense about spoons, and jumping off buildings.

Sci-Fi Lists - Top Science Fiction
The Top 200 Sci-Fi Books list is the flagship of the site, but lists have also been compiled for movies and television with the aim of being the most statistically reliable of their type found anywhere on the net.
To qualify a book has to be generally regarded as science fiction by credible sources and/or recognised as having historical significance to the development of the genre.
The qualification rules are similar to those used for the books list and for statistical purposes films in a series are treated in tallies as stand-alones.

Other films that were among the AandF favorites included P.T. Anderson's multi-character masterpiece Magnolia and Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Gospel According to St. Matthew, a sparse and poverty-stricken account of Christ's life considered by most Jesus movie aficionados to be the greatest of its kind.
Another relative no-brainer for the AandF list was the exquisite Babette's Feast, the story of a cook who spends all she has to bless her employers—and their entire village—with a remarkable feast that reawakens their spirits like the sacrificial fragrance of the jar of perfume poured out over Christ's feet.
