Population density - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Population density is a common biological measurement and is often used by conservationists as a more appropriate measure than absolute numbers.
Cities with exceptionally high population densities are often considered to be overpopulated, though the extent to which this is the case depends on factors like quality of housing and infrastructure or access to resources.
City population is however, heavily dependent on the definition used for the urban area: densities will be far higher for the central municipality than when more recently-developed and as yet administratively unincorporated suburbs are included, as in the concepts of agglomeration or metropolitan area, the latter including sometimes neighbouring cities.

That compendium of major cities of the past 4000 years is notable not only for the novelty of the attempt at world-wide coverage of urbanism, and over such an extended period, but also for the time spent, and care taken, to collect population counts for most of the entries into that list.

 Fucking with our eyes shut
Human populations that haven’t totally destroyed the land they need to exist, outstripped their resource base, or overpopulated their bioregion are the only ones likely to be sustainable – period.
City-building, commodification (trade), and industrialization destroy fecundity, biodiversity, etc., etc. There are a shitload of cities and regions that will never be sustainable – perhaps all of them if they/we don’t stabilize or reduce their populations and restore the landbase, which will probably only come through catastrophic means because humans are fucking stupid and arrogant.
Population density is the key, but you cannot come up with an absolute number for what a sustainable population density is because areas are in different states of degradation.
