Navy lists are divided into two - lists of ships and lists of men though the distinction is not exclusive; the lists of ships will often include their commanders and the lists of men will generally include the ships or shore establishments on which the officers were serving.
Army lists are usually arranged by regiment or corps in order of seniority with officers listed by seniority within their unit and staff officers at the front.

Most retired officers listed here were activated upon the beginning of hostilities in 1939, and were reverted to the retired list either during the war, or upon the cessation of hostilities in 1945.
This doesn't necessarily mean that the officer is without a posting at that time, but is more than often a rough indication that the officer is "in between" two jobs, being on leave, sick or otherwise.
Be aware that a Navy List is usually corrected to the middle of the previous month, so the Navy List of August 1939 is corrected to 18 July 1939.

In late 1885, the Royal Navy was given control of all aerial flyers and etherships in Britain's service, due in part to the Army's bungled handling of these new types of vessels in both the War of the Parhooni Succession and in the Omdurman Campaign.
