Primitive breeds, like the Scottish Soay sheep have to be plucked, not sheared, as the kemps are still longer than the soft fleece, (a process called rooing) or the fleece must be collected from the field after it falls out.

Sheep flocking behaviour is so prevalent in some English breeds that special names apply to the different roles sheep play in a flock.
This sheep ventures further away from the safety of the flock to graze, due to a larger flight zone or a weakness that prevents it from obtaining enough forage when with the herd.
The tendency to act as an outlier, bellwether or to fight for the middle of the flock stays with sheep throughout their adulthood; that is unless they have a scary experience which causes them to increase their flight zone.

The first survey of British breeds in 1973, revealed that 'forgotten' breeds such as the Portland and Manx Loghtan were rare.
Likewise, many of the endangered Down breeds are proven sires of quality, naturally finished, lamb but they became marginalised in the clamour for a fast growing, uniform “product” and this gave dominance to just a handful of modern breeds.
Traditional sheep breeds are therefore well placed to contribute to the extensification and diversification now required of British farming and countryside management.

Wool history and the history of England are closely interwoven.  Legend says the first sheep were brought to the island by the Phoencians sometime between 800 and 500 BC.  From these sheep come the meat-producing or "mutton" types, as contrased with breeds raised primaily for wool.
As settlers moved west during the 1800's, they took with them flocks of sheep from the eastern seaboard.  Most of these sheep were of English breeding, more suited to producing lamb than wool.
