Japanese battleship Yamato - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
She and her sister ship Musashi were the largest battleships ever constructed, weighing 65,027 tons and armed with nine 18.1 in (460 mm) main guns.
She returned to the conflict and joined the Japanese fleet in the Battle of the Philippine Sea (June) and the Battles of Leyte Gulf and Samar Gulf (October), during which she first fired her main guns.
Interestingly, the survey of the ship indicated that the Yamato was equipped with a bulbous bow, which reduces wavemaking resistance at high speeds.

Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She was laid down as the third Yamato class battleship (of four planned), but following the losses in the Battle of Midway was completed with a flight deck, making her the largest carrier of her era.
She was sunk on November 29, 1944 by four torpedoes launched from the submarine USS Archerfish (Commander Joseph F. Enright) while she was transferred from Yokosuka to Kure - the hull compartmentation had not yet been installed.
Like many other Japanese ships, including Yamato, she took her name from a Japanese province.

Pearl Harbor Attack: Index of Action Reports
Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, commander of the Japanese fleet, devised a plan to immobilize the U.S. fleet at the outset of the war with a surprise attack.
The Navy air bases at Ford Island and Kaneohe Bay, the Marine airfield at Ewa and the Army Air Corps fields at Bellows, Wheeler and Hickam were all bombed and strafed as other elements of the attacking force began their assaults on the ships moored in Pearl Harbor.
American technological skill raised and repaired all but three of the ships sunk or damaged at Pearl Harbor (the USS Arizona (BB-39) considered too badly damaged to be salvaged, the USS Oklahoma (BB-37) raised and considered too old to be worth repairing, and the obsolete USS Utah (AG-16) considered not worth the effort).

USSBS: Interrogations of Japanese Officials -- Captain TAMURA, Kyuzo, IJN
The Japanese were not prepared for such air attacks, and although the defense against mining was given top priority over all defense matters, countermeasures, particularly against the pressure type mine, were neither effective nor available in sufficient quantity.
The captain of a ship simply assumes that his ship was sunk by a submarine, it does not occur to him that it may have been a mine.
However, the Japanese felt that the use of aircraft units as protection against dropping of mines by B-29s was more important than the actual protection of the cities, because the life lines from the continent which furnished food and supplies were of first priority.

Articles - Japanese battleship Mikasa   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Her main guns, grouped in armoured turrets in a central position, allowed for the rest of the ship to be evenly protected with the heavy Krupp protective steel plates.
The performance of the Japanese fleet was observed and analysed by Western powers, and played an important role in the definition of the next generation of battleships (the Dreadnoughts), since the conflict "confirmed the greater efficiency of heavy guns and the importance of long-range gunfire." ("The Battleship Dreadnought" Conway Marine).
Finally, the Japanese victory confirmed Japan's emergence as the pre-eminent power in east Asia, and a force to be reckoned with on the international scene.
