Shipwrecks are attractive to maritime archaeologists because they preserve historical information, for example the Mary Rose, which revealed information about seafaring, warfare and life in the 1500s.
Recreational divers often enjoy shipwrecks because they are often interesting to explore, provide large habitats for many types of marine life and have a history, for example SS Thistlegorm.
Shipwrecks typically decay rapidly when in sea water; however shipwrecks in some fresh water lakes, such as the Great Lakes of North America, have remained intact with little degradation.

Though not a listing of shipwrecks, this directory includes maritime museums, record offices, archives, and historical societies accross the world.
It includes a list of over twenty shipwrecks offshore the Virginia Beach area, ranging in age from 1888 through the 1970s, including a number of WWII era wrecks.

Maritime researchers say the waters around the Northwest Hawaiian Islands are full of shipwrecks and aircraft crash sites waiting to be discovered and studied.
His documentation during the September voyage of 16 shipwrecked vessels, 16 ship anchors and two aircraft crash sites was the first of its kind in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and one of few maritime archaeology surveys ever done in the Hawaiian Islands as a whole, he said.

Lloyd's List of May 26, 1747, listed the Rose, Captain Murdock, sailing from Jamaica to London, as lost in the "Gulph." Robert Marx's Spanish Treasure in Florida Waters shows the Rose as a British merchantman and as lost in the Gulf of Florida.
The vessel Elizabeth, Captain Brewer, bound from Jamaica for London, was reported in Lloyd's List of March 7, 1760, as lost in the "Gulf of Florida," and her crew as arrived at South Carolina.
