When I look at the small presses that I'll be discussing here, I see risk-taking, some of it rational and other times irrational (that it is to say, decisions made for love rather than money), but all of it performing the crucial role of incubating talent and making lovely works of art along the way.
What follows is a list of small presses in the field, and this list represents a tremendous amount of hard work on the part of many, many people.
It can be difficult for a small press, usually with only a handful of staff and that staff made up of people picked for their knowledge about print publishing, to keep their website in good shape.

 LitLine: A Website for the Independent Literary Community
The press, which places an emphasis on publishing women poets, was named for Alice James, sister of William and Henry, whose gift for writing was ignored and whose fine journal did not appear in print until after her death.
Slapering Hol Press, the small press imprint of The Hudson Valley Writers' Center, was established in 1990 to provide publishing opportunities for emerging poets who have not yet published a book or chapbook, and to produce anthologies of a thematic nature.
Thistledown Press is first and foremost a literary publisher; the house enjoys a reputation for producing distinctive and award-winning poetry and fiction by both emerging and established writers.

 Writing for Small Press Publication
The two primary factors considered by a small press publisher when choosing a manuscript for publication are profit/loss and literary merit.
Most small presses have more books waiting to be published than their time or financial resources will allow.
Authors must be willing to assist in promoting their own work (endlessly and often shamelessly) -- the small presses have little of the time and financial resources required for extensive promotional efforts, thus sales depend mostly on the author's efforts and reputation.

Although Nancy Welch swore never to return to the small Ohio town she left at age 17, the associate professor of English hasn’t exactly been able to keep that promise.
With a penchant for teenage, female narrators in particular — characters inspired by the friends she left behind — Welch catalogues in 12 short stories the disillusionment felt across middle-America during post-1970s layoffs and shutdowns that left families grasping for a sense of stability.

We found fewer presses in Iowa City today compared to its "heydays" of the sixties, when small presses were said to number anywhere from 20 to 30.
The goal of the press is to choose poetry manuscripts that are good enough to be lavishly produced and valued in one hundred or five hundred years' time and to publish the first editions of these texts, before they appear in trade publications.
A four color press is necessary for the photography, and also is not something a small press would purchase for their own use.

The trouble with Lists is they take a long time to make and I would leave off half the items I needed to include and I wrote them on small slips of paper that disappeared.
A structured list was needed and I spent hours making three (3) styles of grocery lists and offering them to my friends and family, except they wanted me to give them pre-printed and pre-made lists because they didn't have any time to copy the grocery lists.
My next List was a Camping List since I always forgot half of the food and supplies when we headed out for a weekend in the Colorado wilderness.

The major houses do not live off their back list as small presses and regional publishers do.
Try to avoid it if you can, but if it turns out to be a deal breaker for the major house, then think of how badly you want them to put your book out -- there is no right or wrong answer here, it's just a matter of badly you want them to publish you.

The annotated list of ALA's Notable Books for Children is now available from the Association for Library Services to Children website.
