The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Scandinavian Culture
The social democratic parties of Finland and Iceland are less easy to fit into a general Scandinavian model of social democracy, although it should be noted that both of these parties negotiated agreements with *agrarian parties during the 1930s and entered red-green coalitions very similar to their counterparts in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
Social democratic parties were in government for most of this period, and presided over an era of high rates of economic growth, low unemployment and rising living standards.
If the Scandinavian social democratic parties have lost much of their distinctiveness in terms of ideology, then most scholars would agree that this is probably the case as far as the organisation of the parties is concerned as well.

Important among those gravitating to socialism are students, who are often fired up by their introduction to new ideas, have not acquired the cynical acceptance of the status quo of their routinized elders, are stimulated by each other's company, and have the energy of youth.
These parties, which profess to have socialism as their ultimate aim in the vague, distant future (some of them have formally given up even their nominal adherence to socialism) have become managers of capitalism in crisis.
The Democratic Party, which is almost entirely financed by large corporations, is no more a party of labor than a company union organized by a boss is a real union fighting for the rights of its members.

Marxist vs. Anarchist Views on Political Parties
The argument of anarchist origin, also taken up by ultraleftist "councilist" currents, according to which political parties are by their very nature "liberal-bourgeois" formations alien to the proletariat and have no place in workers councils because they tend to usurp political power from the working class, is theoretically incorrect and politically harmful and dangerous.
Political parties in that real (and not formal) sense of the word are a historical phenomenon the contents of which have obviously changed in different epochs, as occurred in the great bourgeois-democratic revolutions of the past (especially, but not only, in the great French revolution).
Empirical evidence confirms Marxist theory, showing that it is the free and democratic selforganization of the toiling masses, dialectically combined with the political clarification made possible by a revolutionary vanguard party in the leadership, that represents the best chance for the conquest and continuous exercise of power by the working class itself.

Social democracy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Social democracy is a political ideology that emerged in the late 19th century.
In recent years, a number of social democratic parties and governments have arguably moved away from some traditional elements of social democracy—supporting, for example, the privatisation of state-controlled industries and services and a reduction in the regulation of the market.
Most social democrats support gay marriage, abortion rights and a liberal drug policy, while others are either non-committed or openly opposed strongly to these policies, although feigned opposition may be employed for political expediency.

Why is there no third party in the U.S.?
Despite their differences, these two parties share a fundamental stake in promoting the interests of big business and the economic, political and military dominance of the U.S. over the rest of the world.
This two-party duopoly is generally regarded as an inescapable fact of life, even among some of its harshest critics, while efforts to build social democratic or labor parties that exist elsewhere in the industrialized world--even Canada--are dismissed as doomed to failure.
Perhaps the most disastrous effect of Democratic Party politics on the U.S. left is that it allows the left’s collective memory to stretch no further back than the last election, so political lessons such as those from the 1930s have been lost on current generations.
